The growing strength of Bluetooth in cars is a key area that E-Lead Electronic intends to exploit.
“Next year we will see Bluetooth devices that can handle video streams,” said Mark Su, vice president of marketing.
“The chips are getting very powerful.”
The company is testing out a system that will use Bluetooth to take the video stream from the rear-view camera to save on wiring.
“This is under test now,” said Su. “We expect to see this out early this year. We already have audio streaming products using Bluetooth.”
The company sells 80% of its products directly to OEMs with the other 20% to OEM suppliers. He said this was why the firm’s infotainment products still used CD changers rather than going for docks for music players such as the IPod.
“The OEMs still don’t really like IPod docks,” he said, “because the quality is not good enough for vibration and shock resistance. The IPod dock is still more popular as an aftermarket product.”
But he said in the long term as the price fell, IPod docks would become more popular and CD changers would be phased out.
“But the car industry is very conservative,” he said, “so it will be 2016 to 2018 before we see the main change.”
